It's Like Flying to Germany in 20 Minutes!

It’s Like Flying to Germany in 20 Minutes Without Ever Leaving Home. Hansel + Gretel is the first German food delivery service in Arizona. TEMPE, Ariz. (Nov. 29, 2021) -- Once upon a time two beautiful and slightly mischievous German children who lived in the deep, dark Black Forest of Old Bavaria were told the tales of an old witch, Oder Hexe. On cold winter nights, they would gather around the warm hearth and learn of the witch’s magic recipes that could bring comfort to the weary and delicious flavors to the bored. So, Hansel and Gretel made a plan to steal those recipes from the old witch and bring them to the new world. Not only did they succeed in stealing the magic recipes, but they also became magic themselves, able to transport delicious food to your door in the fastest of times. Such is the mythology behind a new delivery restaurant called Hansel + Gretel Delivery (www.hanselandgreteldelivery.com). When Ronnie Horvath came to the U.S. in 2017 he found himself missing his home food constantly. In the last ten years, Arizona’s restaurants have become quite diverse. Even still, there is little to no quality, delicious German cuisine here. And yet, the state has the most German residents across the country. Realizing he could rarely find his good old German schnitzel in the U.S. Horvath convinced his wife, Nicole to create their own German Cuisine Delivery Service. With Nicole on board, they started cooking for their neighbors and sharing their favorite old-world recipes and delivered hundreds of meals and packages. The reviews were astounding - they loved it! And so, Hansel and Gretel was born. FAST FACTS:

If the pandemic taught us anything it’s that we don’t have to leave our homes to enjoy a great meal and drinks with the ones we love. Restaurant delivery is here to stay. For that reason, Hansel and Gretel decided on the unique approach of delivery versus a sit-down restaurant. Housed in the Tempe Food Court, a Cloud Kitchen space, in Tempe, Ariz., Hansel and Gretel is one of 50 restaurants where consumers can order their favorite comfort food to enjoy at home. Using popular delivery apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash, all one has to do is open an app and hit “confirm order” to be transported to Germany in 20 minutes or less. The Horvaths (and their two investors) wanted to base their cuisine on the simple food made by their own grandparents after World War II. The war brought a lot of destruction and poverty so neighbors joined forces and pooled their simple ingredients like flour, salt, and eggs to make the best food possible for the whole street. Based on her grandmother’s tradition, Nicole wants to provide quality comfort food made with simple ingredients to continue this legacy with Hansel and Gretel. Working alongside Chef Christopher Weist, (previously with the Four Seasons), Nicole prepares every delivery using recipes handed down by generations. The menu is simple but robust without being overwhelming. Many dishes are named after popular parodied German figures and movie stars, there are a number of well-familiar dishes. One combination features two adult size chicken schnitzels with a choice of fries or German spaetzle with gravy. For those all-night study sessions on the ASU campus, another perfect choice is a Schnitzel burger and fries, a heartier version of the fast-food variety that is as affordable as it is delicious. Look for oversize pieces of juicy chicken or pork and hearty servings of german potato salad, cucumber salad, and spaetzle.
